6 & 7 Planting Materials needed (cleaned yogurt container)

Very shortly we will begin planting some tomato seeds that have been in the high Arctic or in the International Space Station.

In order for you to bring your tomato home, you will need a pot for it to grow in.

The best pots that I have found can be made by recycling your yogurt containers.

Please save, rinse well and bring to class any and all yogurt containers that you may use, larger or small, we can use all kinds.  If your container has a lid, rinse and bring that too.

I will be talking to everyone in class and at lunch tomorrow about how best to save your containers.

Thank you in advance for all of the containers for your plants!

Describe the Procedure
The procedure describes the experiment in a step-by-step sequence. It may
help to think of the procedure as a recipe, in which every step is clearly
explained.
How will your materials be used, and how and when will they be measured?
If each step is carefully explained, another person should be able to follow
the procedure of the experiment and get the same, or similar, results.
List your procedure on a separate piece of paper either neatly handwritten or
typed.

6 & 7 Habitat Poster Reminder

Habitat posters are due next Wednesday, 3/13/13

Use the diagram on page 10 of your text as a guide to how to set up your poster.  You can replace the prairie dog with your animal and its population and community.

Be sure to label your diagrams neatly!

We will be using the posters for an activity related to the food chains and food webs.

Please keep your posters to the size that I demonstrated in class, smaller is better, bigger will be hard to use for the activity.

I'm looking forward to seeing what our community of animals will look like!!

6 & 7 Habitat Poster due 3/13/13

You have all chosen an animal that lives in New Hampshire to research and create a habitat poster about.
Please use the example on page 11 of your text as a guide to creating your poster.
You may draw your own pictures, take photos or use Google Images.
Site your sources on the back of your poster.

Your poster should be no bigger than a half sheet of poster board since we will be using them for another activity as we move farther into the adventure of ecosystems and how they work.

Your poster should include:
  • the name of your animal and its scientific (Latin) name
  • where the animal lives in New Hampshire (the whole state, northern areas only, southern areas only, in lakes, streams or at the ocean, etc)
  • the resources that the animal needs in its habitat to survive
  • the population of this animal in New Hampshire
  • the type of community the animal lives in
  • the ecosystem that supports the animals survival
You will be graded on the following: 5 points each

  • Neatness
  • Labels on all items (horizontal labels)
  • All information is included
  • All parts are identified clearly
  • Images, drawings, pictures are of NH animals (no desert coyotes, rocky mountain black bears, etc)

678 Science Fair Research Project - Hypothesis

Below is the next assignment for your Science Fair Research Project
I will be handing this out on Monday
The due date is in bold.

Hypothesis

Make a Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a statement that predicts how an experiment will turn out, and why it will happen that way, based on what you already know. What do you think that the answer to your research question will be?
Remember, hypotheses do not need to be correct - they just need to be informed guesses. If you have enough research on this topic, then your research should help you make a good hypothesis.
A Hypothesis is often written using an “If…, then…, because…” format.

Your research question __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Your Hypothesis based on your research (your because statement should paraphrase from your research) Use more paper if needed or type on a separate sheet of paper.
